Moncel Dunaj. Charcoal, Chalk Pastel, Acrylic Paint. 15" x 20". 2022.
This project was an unconventional take on a portrait of an artist. The portrait is of Marcel Duchamp who is known for his "ready mades" like "Prelude to a Broken Arm", which was a snow shovel hung in a gallery, and "Fountain", which was a urinal signed with the name R. Mutt. Another one of Duchamp's works was a Mona Lisa postcard that he drew a goatee on and titled "L.H.O.O.Q", which is a play on the French words for "She Has A Hot Ass".
Progress Of "Moncel Dunaj"
Duchamp used humor in his works to comment on what was considered art and I wanted to capture that in this piece. For my inspiration I chose to use "L.H.O.O.Q". I chose a collage style layout because Duchamp was active around the Dada period which heavily featured collage work. Duchamp's portrait is drawn with charcoal, The torso is chalk pastel, and the legs are painted with acrylic. I chose the light pink background to reinforce the overall sensuality of the portrait.
